John Schalter has been a personal injury lawyer since 1979. He graduated from Michigan State University in '73, Summa Cum Laude as an Evans Scholar with a degree in Political Science and Honors English. There he was a member of Honors College and played Big Ten Football. He was also chosen to represent MSU as a Rhodes Scholar Candidate. From there he went on to law school at Notre Dame University, where he wrote for the Notre Dame Law Journal and served as an Intern for the National Center for Law and the Handicapped.

He is licensed in Michigan and California and a member of the Michigan Bar Association, the American Association of Trial Lawyers, the Michigan Trial Lawyer Association and the Macomb County Bar Association and practices law in both Federal and State Courts throughout the state of Michigan. He is founder and owner of the Injury Law Center, P.C. and is of counsel to Ravid and Associates, P.C. in Southfield, Michigan, a group of ten lawyers specializing in personal injury law.

Throughout his career, John has had pre-litigation settlements regularly in the six figure range and as much as one million dollars. He handles cases involving Auto Accidents, Premises Liability, Defective Products, Police Brutality, Medical Malpractice, Work Injuries, and most other injury claims.

He is a member of the Michigan Better Business Bureau where he produced, in conjunction with AAA insurance company and the BBB, the consumer information tool, "CRASH COURSE," the first DVD in the country dealing with auto safety, auto insurance, and auto accidents in both the litigation and pre-litigation stages. He has served as Secretary-Treasurer of the Birmingham Business Network Institute.

He has also worked as an NFL agent and is a member of the Writers Guild of America. His hobby is screenwriting, where he has written over 30 screenplays, one of which was produced by Showtime, the feature film entitled "Safehouse.

Q: I've been hurt in an accident and I want to file a claim for my injuries. What's the first thing I should do?

A: There are a number of things you can do in the first few days and weeks after an accident to protect your right to compensation, such as:

1) write down as much as you can about the accident itself, your injuries and any other losses (such as wages) you've suffered as a result of the accident;

2) make notes of conversations that you have with people involved in the accident or the injury claim;

3) preserve evidence of who caused the accident and what damage was done by collecting physical evidence and taking photographs;

4) locate people who witnessed the accident and who might be able to help you prove your case;

5) notify anyone you think might be responsible for the accident of your intention to file a claim for your injuries, especially if a government agency or employee may be involved; and

6) contact a personal injury attorney to evaluate and pursue your claim.
